Consum, the Spanish cooperative in the distribution sector, will only sell oranges and mandarins that have the Citricos Valencianos Protected Geographical Identification (PGI) quality seal in all its supermarkets in the Valencian Community, Catalonia, and Murcia from the end of November to the end of April.
As part of its commitment to local and proximity products during the national citrus season, Consum will renew its agreement with the Valencian PGI for another year. The cooperative will increase its purchases of oranges and mandarins with a quality seal by 10% to 6,000 tons, thus supporting Valencian citrus growers.
In total, the entity will purchase more than 20,000 tons of mandarins and oranges of national origin during the 2022-23 campaign, increasing the volume of its purchases from local suppliers by 9% over the previous year. 90% of that volume will be of Valencian origin.
In the case of Catalonia, the Cooperative will also market the PGI Clementines de les Terres de l'Ebre in its supermarkets. Specifically, it will purchase 100,000 kilos of Clemenules with PGI for the 2022-23 campaign, i.e. 10% more than in the last campaign.
The cooperative has also started this month the national lemon campaign by purchasing 3,000 tons of Primofiori lemons, of Murcia origin, and the grapefruit campaign purchasing 500,000 kilograms of Star Ruby grapefruits, also of Murcia origin.
