Recent research by ApexBrasil, a Brazilian promotion agency, found great opportunities for Brazilian melons in Chinese market. This market was identified as “especially large” for Brazilian fruit exports, mainly the city of Zhejiang, in eastern China. The “Market Access Study on Melons in China”, an unprecedented survey carried out by ApexBrasil, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), gathers criteria for access to the melon market in the Asian country.
China opened the doors for melon exports to Brazil in 2019. The study provides important information for producers, according to ApexBrasil Market Access coordinator, Gustavo Ribeiro, with information on import taxes, main regulations and standards for export to the Chinese market, in addition to possible contacts with distributors and importers, among other matters.
Although China also produces melons, the survey points out that there is room for Brazilian exports. Brazil was the main international supplier of the fruit to the Chinese market in 2021, with US$ 128,000 in sales last year.
