The chairman of Nigeria's Edo State's All farmers Association, Joel Usiagu, encouraged farmers in the South of the country to plant watermelons in the area not traditionally known for growing the crop.
Usiagu, who has planted 12 hectares of watermelon seeds, that are somewhat expensive at N15 000 (about $33.8) for 1 000 seeds, says he is due to start harvesting during November. Although there are certain challenges like crows and cows who try to feed on the watermelons, farmers can do well by growing the crops there.
