According to the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea/Esalq-USP) , which calculates the indicator together with the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA), the Gross Domestic Product of Brazilian agribusiness dropped 0.8% in the first quarter of this year.
According to Cepea data, the fall was registered both in the agricultural sector (-0.75%) and in livestock (-0.96%). “To a large extent, it was linked to the sharp rise in costs with inputs in agriculture and also in the agro-industry”, says Cepea, in a note.
Among the agribusiness segments, only inputs grew in the first quarter (9.61%). Cepea researchers indicate that this performance was mainly driven by the appreciation of agricultural inputs, such as fertilizers, pesticides and machinery – which is reflected in the pressure of costs on agriculture, as mentioned.
Within the portfolio, in agriculture, the drop in GDP (-4.22%) in the quarter is due to the intense increase in costs with fertilizers, pesticides, fuel, seeds and others. “The drop was not more intense because it is also estimated growth in agricultural revenue in the year, a reflection of the expected expansion of crops, especially corn and coffee, and the rise in real prices of agricultural products, especially coffee, wood, tomato, cassava, sugarcane and cotton,” emphasizes the study center.
