According to the statistical data on organic production that IFOAM and FIBL have just presented, the market for organic products worldwide has registered the greatest growth in recent years and now stands at 120,000 million euro. In Spain, the market continues to advance and is already at 2,528 million euro. However, the sector needs a decided commitment to boost it.
The Spanish professional association of organic production warned about the data presented by IFOAM and FIBL, corresponding to the year 2020, and asked the administrations for more aid to reach the objective set by Europe for 2030, that 25% of the country's SAU is organic on this date.
Currently, Spain has 2,437,891 hectares and it's behind France, which has 2,548,677 hectares, in the European ranking. Both are followed by Italy with 2,095,380 hectares of organic land.
According to the president of Ecovalia, Alvaro Barrera, this data shows that Spain cannot live forever on rents, because we have already been surpassed by France in terms of surface. Public administrations have to commit to organic production, especially when this system is at the center of European policy on the 2030 horizon, he added.
The worldwide organic market has grown by 13%, going from 106,000 million euro in 2019 to 120,647 million euro in 2020. βIt is the highest growth in recent years; more than 14,000 million euro. This is proof that consumers are choosing, more and more, to include organic products in their shopping cart,β Barrera stated.
The world area devoted to organic production increased by 3.5% over 2019, reaching 74.9 million hectares worldwide.
"These figures show that the organic sector is doing its job, but that we need a firm commitment to this sector so that Spain can reach the objective of having 25% of its agricultural area and increasing organic consumption to 10% by 2030,β Alvaro Barrera stated.
