Mourad Ben Salem, Med’Essor:

“This year, the Maltese orange of Tunisia promises to be qualitative!”

In order to meet the qualitative requirements of large retailers and the European market, the producers of Maltese oranges of Tunisia, the Tunisia Ministry of Agriculture and Gilfruits have joined forces to reduce the inputs in crops, as well as the use of phytosanitary products. A choice in favor of quality that has an impact on the quantity produced since a 30% decrease in volumes is expected for this campaign.

“The Maltese orange of Tunisia really deserves to be known!”
Mourad Ben Salem, manager of Med’Essor, a company located on the market of Rungis, is particularly fond of this variety. He has been selling it for about 12 years under his own brand. “The Maltese half-blood orange is the variety most commonly associated with Tunisia, as it is the only country in the world producing and exporting it. It is a sweet orange, very juicy, which has the advantage of being consumed as a table orange or in juice. This citrus fruit really deserves to be known. In the continuity of the efforts undertaken by Gilfruits, we will organize an event at the end of January with tastings to make it better known.”

“The plan is to export 19,000 tons of Maltese oranges to Europe”
The campaign of Maltese oranges of Tunisia will start on January 10th and will end in late April. “The merchandise is ready and the expected Brix degree is already reached. The volumes produced are lower this year, but Tunisia plans to export 19,000 tons of Maltese oranges to the European market, as in the past season. We will therefore be able to meet the demand easily. Additionally, calibers tend to be larger this year. A significant advantage that will allow us to meet all the requirements of our clients through our Med’Essor brand, which brings a guarantee in terms of quality, certification and service.”
