Peruvian blueberries and mandarins have opportunities in Asian countries

Thailand and Malaysia are potential destinations for Peruvian blueberries and mandarins, respectively, stated the Minister of the Diplomatic Service of the Republic (SDR) of the Embassy of Peru in Thailand, Carmen Azurin, and the second secretary of the SDR of the Embassy of Peru in Malaysia, Guillermo Lauriano, during their participation in the virtual forum 'Blueberry market profile to Thailand and mandarins to Malaysia'; an event that was part of an agreement signed by the Exporters Association (ADEX), the Academic Centers of ADEX (Ceadex), and the Ministry of Foreign Relations (RR.EE.).

According to Carmen Azurin, Peruvian blueberry can enter Thailand thanks to the advantage granted by the bilateral protocol of 2011, with a preferential tariff of 0%. The post-COVID-19 'new normal' will accentuate the purchase of healthy products, and people will prefer innocuous, tasty, accessible foods that strengthen the immune system, she added. In addition, they will choose brands that respect the environment and practice social sustainability.

“The national blueberry must differentiate itself from the competition by maintaining a good size, quality, and a slight degree of acidity, as the Thais prefer it. It is also essential to have certifications that guarantee safety and care for the environment. Organic products are more valued and have a higher price,” she emphasized.

Guillermo Lauriano said that Peruvian mandarin producers had to increase their production in order to compete with consolidated suppliers to take advantage of Malaysia's potential as a destination for Peruvian mandarins. "It is important to highlight the exports of this citrus to China, as it could be of interest to some Malaysian importers with Chinese ancestry," he added.
