More direct routes to Eastern Europe for Moroccan fruits and vegetables

Late last week, 28 Moroccan fruit and vegetable producers and operators met with representatives of Poland’s three main logistics companies. The goal of the meeting was to explore ways to increase exports of Moroccan fresh produce to Eastern Europe.

Moroccan operators and Morocco Foodex have worked with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (Berd) with the financial support of the European Union to develop solutions that would allow Moroccan fruits and vegetables to be shipped directly to Poland at competitive prices.

FAO agro-industry expert Florent Tomatis said a recent study has shown that without an established agro-logistics platform in Poland for Moroccan products, it is very difficult to guarantee Polish buyers the delivery of goods. ‘a good quality product, in good quantity and on time. During the meeting, Moroccan operators and Polish agro-logistics operators discussed possible scenarios for setting up such platforms, including costs and other requirements.

Othman Tlemcani, senior banker at the EBRD, said these efforts were part of an initiative funded by the European Union, FAO and EBRD to improve high value-added business opportunities for the Moroccan horticultural sector.
