There's been a flurry of onion activity in recent weeks. However, demand has been somewhat tempered this week. That's according to Martin de Dreu of De Dreu Onions in the Netherlands. "It's a bit quieter for the first time. But, we've sent a lot of onions out in recent weeks."
"We, too, have been very busy. Mostly with West Africa and England. We'll have to see if we can keep this up for now. When Senegal closes its borders, it'll take a big bite out of the volumes. For England, Brexit is a major uncertainty. As onion exporters, we have experience with the paperwork for exports to third countries. It won't make things any easier, though. A little more clarity would be welcome. Our British clients know as little as we do."
"One thing's sure - I don't see prices and exports rising any time soon. There's currently no demand from Eastern Europe either. But those countries always come to the market a little later. Large onions are selling for about €0,20 at the moment. I haven't noticed any quality issues. We've loaded lovely Class I white onions this week. There will, undoubtedly, be a few more battered onions. However, so far, there haven't been any problems," concludes Martin.
