The Peruvian mango season is about to begin. "Next week we will receive the first Kent mangos in Europe," says Henk van der Meij of Hars & Hagebauer. According to the importer, the season is in no way comparable to the bizarre 2019/2020 season. "Last season was dominated by an abundant harvest and a sudden export stop due to Covid-19. Now the cards have been dealt very differently."
"The first signs are that Peru has more small sizes at its disposal as a result of the water shortage. The season seems to be starting slowly and that is fine, because there is still enough Brazilian product on the market," says Henk. "The prices are not too high, so with a calm phasing out of the Brazilian season and a calm start of Peru, it is a very healthy situation in this market."
"Given the mediocre harvest, I am not worried about pricing this season," said the importer. Although the first ten days of December were not wild on the mango market, he expects demand from the retail channel in particular to increase in the coming days. "You can now see that the supermarkets are already attracting the right sizes. Let the season begin!"
