Price of blueberries from Shandong, China falling constantly

"The sales season of heated-greenhouse blueberries from Shandong is coming to an end. This year, this production area has not yet been hit by severe typhoons or frost, and the production is more or less on par with previous years, but prices haven’t been very promising, especially at the end of the season where they fell constantly,” reported Liu, the manager of Qingdao Aomori Zhenpin.

“There are three forms of cultivation in Shandong: heated greenhouse, unheated greenhouse, and open field. Blueberries currently on the market are switching from those grown in heated greenhouses to unheated greenhouses. Prices of heated-greenhouse blueberries this season are about 15% lower than the same period in previous years, at about 30-40 yuan per half a kilo,” Liu said.

“With the crop from Yunnan leaving the market, open-field products from Qingdao will become available in mid-June. I expect prices to gradually stabilize in the next two weeks. There are three main reasons for the decline in prices this quarter. First of all, the Chinese local market has just awakened after a period of slumber, and market demand has not yet fully recovered. Secondly, while Yunnan province has a large production and thus a big market share, blueberries from Dalian and Dandong are cheaper and command an advantage in pricing. Therefore, although there are many varieties in Qingdao, there is no obvious advantage in terms of pricing. "

"Shandong is a big producer of blueberries in China, thanks to its coastal geographical conditions and suitable climate. The fruit has a high sugar content and great eating quality. There are many varieties in Qingdao. O'Neal is one of the main varieties that we grow. Compared with other varieties whose sugar content is at 5%, the sugar content of O'Neal can reach over 15% and is almost tart-free. In addition, they are very highly fragrant. Therefore, they are widely popular with consumers and sell faster than other varieties each year,” Liu said.

"Our products are mainly marketed in Beijing, Shanghai, and first-tier cities in East China." In addition to blueberries, the company’s products include niche fruits such as apples from Aomori and apricots from Laoshan. “We are committed to offering high-quality and differentiated products and building a premium supply chain. Through direct sales from the origin, we manage to reduce the cost of intermediate links and enable consumers to enjoy high-quality fruits with a more competitive price."
