The European grape market is currently facing substantial shortages of white grapes. Prices are also remarkably high for this time of year. "At the moment, mainly South African and Peru have white grapes on the market. The longer-than-usual monsoon season means India started later. We are now seeing the effects of this. We are only expecting larger volumes from India from week 10/11. Until then, the market will certainly remain tight," says Corne van de Klundert of the Dutch company, Origin Fruit Direct.
White, seedless grape punnets are priced between €15,50 and €17. That is an unusually high level for this time of year. "We have never seen that in this period before." According to Corné, these shortages are affecting demand. "There have been hardly any promotions for white, seedless grapes in recent weeks. Logistically, that means sales volumes have decreased significantly," concludes the importer.
