Market Report Austria KW 04 / 2020:

'Potato market without impulse, balanced onion market'

The Austrian market for table potatoes is stable. A sufficient supply contrasts with a seasonally quiet, but steady domestic demand. Since the export business is not competitive due to the current price situation, there is a lack of demand-side impulses. It remains unclear how much stock there is still in Austrian warehouses. The reports on storage qualities are very inconsistent. There are isolated reports of massive problems with stolbur.

In view of the increasing quality-related sortings and the steady domestic business, stocks should be manageable. There is no change in producer prices. At the beginning of the week, in Lower Austria, a price range of 22 to 28 Euro/100 kg depending on variety and quality was mentioned, whereby 25 Euro/100 kg are usually paid for wireworm-free, small packable premium goods with AMA seal of approval. Prices of up to 28 Euro/100 kg were seen in Upper Austria.

Balanced onion market
The situation on the Austrian onion market hardly changed in the previous week. A good sufficient supply of small and medium sized goods is facing a steady domestic demand. Exports can also be made continuously at mostly unchanged prices. Bulky goods are scarce and accordingly sought after. The producer prices have not changed since the previous week. For onions, cleaned and sorted in the box, between 23 and 28 Euro/100 kg were paid for, if the quality and size were appropriate. For qualitatively weaker or smaller batches the price level is significantly lower.

Carrot market balanced
The Lower Austrian carrot market is well balanced. The available supply quantities are manageable. This year, these are further reduced by increased sorting due to the feeding of mice and excessive storage temperatures. Domestic demand is satisfactory throughout. Exports can also be made on an ongoing basis. Producer prices remain stable at last previous week's levels.
