The mango season in Brazil is slowly but surely coming to an end; Brazilian products are expected to flow in only until week 51. Christoph Buchner, Managing Director of Hausladen Fruchthandelsgesellschaft in Munich, recently returned from a trip to Peru.
"The mango season in Brazil is slowly coming to an end. The last major exports were probably sent out in the 49th calendar week and they will arrive in Europe in the 51st calendar week. After that, exports from Brazil will fall sharply," says Buchner. "All in all, the season unfortunately did not live up to the expectations. The quality of the Palmer variety was less than expected, so that we had to sort out the poorer goods during or shortly after the ripening process. The latter would not even reach the consumer."
The Keitt variety, on the other hand, is having a positive season, Buchner said: "The Keitt did very well. We also had no problems with internal tanning due to various changes in production. The incalculable losses of recent years due to internal spoilage did not occur at all this year. Even though Keitt's volume fell short of expectations, the market was always sufficiently supplied."
On his trip to Peru he got an overview of the situation in the regions of Sullana/Tambogrande as well as in Jayanca/Motupe. "Basically one can assume a strong season in the northern region of Peru. There is one limitation: The sizes are rather small this year. Currently more than 50% are harvested in calibers 10 and smaller."
This will change in the course of the season, but the shares will only shift by one caliber."
Altogether there was a delay to the start of the season due to the 'cold' weather: "Originally people spoke of a start in the 45th/46th calendar week. This has now been postponed by two weeks. But during my visit we had clear nights and day temperatures of 'only' 30 degrees. Normal would have been 35 degrees and more. This leads to delays in the harvest. Currently we assume that the export volume will only increase significantly from the end of the 51st week for arrival in Europe in week 3." This will result in a very tense market in the first three weeks of the new year.

"In the Casma region, whose products are mainly marketed in weeks 8 -14, we expect 20% more than in the previous year. Although this is generally positive, the forecasts for the middle of the year were still at 50% growth."

The fruit fly can be a big risk for the mangoes this year. "This year, new, Europe-wide regulations for the control of fruit flies have come into force, which can affect exports. This is particularly true of the Motupe region, which is in great danger here. The fruit fly is particularly common in this humid area. We will have to wait and see, because exports from Motupe will not be loaded until weeks 6-9 in 2020," Buchner concludes.
