Uruguayan blueberries denied a market in China by 30% tariffs

Last week, there was an announcement about the first export batch of Uruguayan blueberries to China by the Salta company Gamorel SA. The shipment departed on October 26th, from Carrasco airport to Shanghai on two pallets with 450 boxes. The fruit was of three varieties: Snowchaser, Emerald and Primadonna.

Adolfo Storni Chairman of the Board of Directors of Gamorel SA has pointed out that the opening of the Chinese market took place last year. The businessman said that "Unfortunately this export is something symbolic" since it is very difficult to see the Chinese market as an important destination for blueberry exports since the import tariffs are at 30%.

"It is difficult to compete against products from Chile or Peru that are being exported with 0% tariffs, practically leaving us out of the market," added Storni, who stressed that Uruguay must continue working at a government level to be able to reduce or eliminate Chinese import tariffs completely.
