Anaïs Fauchille, Kissao:

“We can supply our clients with ginger all year round”

The Chinese ginger campaign is coming to an end. “We will receive the last containers in the coming weeks,” explains Anaïs Fauchille, product manager at Kissao. But this year, the quality of the last ginger shipments arriving in Europe seem satisfactory. “We will be able to offer Chinese ginger in December, because the product is keeping well, compared to last year. Given the reduced offer and the quality of the merchandise, prices will remain relatively sustained until the end of the year.”

The new harvest of Chinese ginger starts in January. The first containers then arrive in Europe in February. So there is very little missing to go around the calendar.

In order to offer ginger all year round without interruption to its clients, Kissao also works with other origins. “The main origin we import is China because it still has the highest volumes, larger calibers and more advantageous prices. Additionally, the Brazil origin is growing each year. The campaign starts in the summer and should also now come to an end, although the European market is currently still receiving a significant quantity of merchandise. Finally, we import ginger from Peru; the campaign is currently in full swing. This origin offers a different variety, smaller and thinner. Its taste is very popular among consumers because it has a better balance between strength and flavor. These various origins allow us to offer more volumes to our clients during the complicated period in December and January,” explains Anaïs.

Peru mostly produces organic ginger. As for China, Kissao selects its producers with particular attention. “Ginger is a root produced in the ground, so it is highly subject to the absorption of pesticides. As part of our quality policy and our IFS Broker and IFS Food certifications, we made a rigorous selection of Chinese suppliers to work with. We carry out analyses before departure and upon arrival of the container to ensure the quality and good compliance with European phytosanitary regulations.”

For a few years now, Anaïs has observed an increase in the demand for ginger. “We supply more and more. It is actually one of our main products and we offer it mostly to large French supermarkets which we supply all year round.”
