Good prospects for cherry production in Romania

In south-eastern Romania, there are 85 hectares of intensive and super-intensive cherry orchards, ranging from the earliest to the latest cultivars (from around May 15th to around July 20th).

Orchards are entirely covered in anti-hail nets and 35% are covered with anti-rain nets (used for the most profitable yet more delicate varieties).

Ferrovia cherries, albeit not native, adapt to well to the local territory.

"The main cultivars are Ferrovia, Kordia and Regina, while the Sweet series includes Lorenz, Gabriel and Arianna. All cherries are commercialized under two brands: Eva ("The cherry of sin") and July ("Your natural taste"). We also have a 3-hectare artificial lake that accumulates rainwater and we use it for irrigation," reports Roberto Trevisiol, manager of Paradisul Inflorit.

"We have a 2000 sq m processing warehouse where cherries are taken after being harvested. The temperature is quickly diminished using the Hydrocooler system (water cooling), which is essential to prolong their shelf-life. Then we use grader Cherry Vision by Unitec to assess the internal and external quality of the fruits."

"Cherries are placed in 2 and 5 kg crates and put in controlled atmosphere units. The area in front of the loading platforms is also refrigerated and so are the trucks in order to preserve the produce shelf-life."

"The company has grown a lot over the past two years and started supplying retail chains, general markets and industries in Romania. Good results were achieved in northern Italy as well, where Gabrieli distributes the produce. Feedback from the German and Swiss market has also been positive."

"Our objective is to leave a mark with our products and bewitch consumers with cherries that have a good grade, bright color and crunchy flesh. In the future, we would like to improve our supply and increase our volumes, which are currently 500 tons. We also aim at conquering other European and international markets despite the strong competition from Spain, Turkey and Greece."
