Hans Maagendans, Banafood:

"Limited banana supply ensures stable market"

The German banana market is developing calmly and steadily. This is according to Hans Maagendans of Banafood. Banafood is an independent ripening company in Straelen, Germany.

"The supply is not overly large. It has been on the cold side at night in countries such as Ecuador. This affects production. This lower production keeps free-market prices at a good level."

When a month has the letter 'R' in its name, that usually means an upswing in the banana market. This year, however, the market kept up in the summer months too. "July and August are normally the worst months. Now, prices are remaining fairly stable," Hans says.

He expects the current market situation to continue for the next two or three weeks. "Demand is not even excessive. It is the limited supply that is keeping the market stable. From October, there will be more bananas on the market."
