Shipment of bananas with cholera infected flies detected in Russia

Russian health authorities have intercepted a shipment of bananas from Ecuador infested with humpback flies, potential carriers of the cholera vibrio, at the port of Novorossíisk.

According to a statement issued by the press service of Roseljoznadzor, the entity responsible for health control in Russia, this is the first case of quarantine in bananas this year. The import of contaminated cargo is prohibited and the banana lot has been returned to Ecuador, the Russian entity stated.

While the statement of the Russian entity and the agency press releases mentions plantains, Richard Salazar, the president of the Banana Marketing and Export Association (Acorbanec), said it was a cargo of bananas and that Agrocalidad (Ecuador's Regulation and Phytosanitary Control Agency) had already been informed about the situation to obtain a diagnosis.
