"We have a very unusual situation on the mango market. The season in Senegal ended two to three weeks early. On top of this the start of the Israel season is also two to three weeks late, with the result that there are few to no mangoes available at the moment," says Joep Jongmans of Special Fruit. "The delay in Israel is partially because of their holidays, which meant few mangoes were harvested, packaged and shipped. The expectation is that there will be more mangoes available from Israel from week 36."
The few Israeli mangoes available at the moment are in the varieties Omer and Kent.
Besides Israel the Brazilian mango season has slowly started up. However, few mangoes are expected until the start of September. "Due to the low volumes on the market the prices are very high," according to Joep. "Despite the high prices the demand is very good and even during the warm summer months the demand remained at a good level. Normally the exotics don't do as well throughout the summer months, but it seems like the tropical weather did the demand some good."
