Philippine pineapples receive warm welcome in Chinese consumer market

The level of consumption in the Chinese fruit market is growing and at the same time an increasing number of Chinese consumers shows a preference for import fruit. The flavor of pineapples imported from the Philippines is better in comparison with pineapples from other production areas. The combination of sweet and sour is just right, and the pineapples are quite ripe. Chinese consumers love pineapples from the Philippines. Apart from this, pineapples from the Philippines are available throughout the year, while the supply period of Chinese and Taiwanese pineapples only lasts two or three months." This is according to Mr. Zhong of Qingdao Gu Fruit Co., Ltd.

"We mainly import S&W Premium MD2 pineapples from the Philippines. We also purchase pineapples from production areas in China and Taiwan in March and April. Of course, the import volume of pineapples is affected during the peak period of the pineapple season between March and May when pineapples from China and Taiwan enter the market in large volumes. In other months the import volume is quite stable, though the overall trend shows an increase of pineapple import volume over the years. As the overall retail volume grows, we are also expanding our retail channels. Almost all consumers in first- and second-tier cities have access to our products. We cooperate with wholesale markets in first- and second-tier cities throughout China, but we also gradually strengthen our relationships with supermarkets, e-commerce platforms, and restaurants. Our partners include Yonghui, Pagoda, Meiri Yitiao, and Benlai Fruitmart."

"The S&W pineapples we import from the Philippines can be divided into those with a top and those without. The complete pineapples are sold 6-12 per box. The shelf-life of this product is quite long, which makes them suitable for wholesale markets. The pineapples without a top are sold 7-12 per box, or 20 per box. The quality-price ratio of topless pineapples is better than the complete pineapple. The topless pineapple is therefore more suitable for retail in supermarkets and for clients who sell freshly cut pineapples. As for packaging, we have discovered that consumers having increasingly high standards. We therefore provide customized packaging and delivery services for online businesses based on their specific requirements. For example, we have designed two types of gift boxes specifically for online retail during festive periods."

"The Chinese market opened for frozen fruit from the Philippines this year. We immediately began to develop S&W frozen fruit products for the Chinese market. These frozen pineapple cubes use the specialized frozen fruit technology developed by the Spanish Nice Fruit company. We use ripe pineapples without preservatives for a healthy pineapple product with a delicious fragrance and exceptional flavor. The first of these S&W frozen pineapple products will soon leave the Philippines on their way to Shanghai. We expect the frozen pineapple cubes from the Philippines to meet with a warm welcome from Chinese consumers."
