Elena Rogojnikova, Hagé International:

“Fairly good avocado market in first half of 2019”

“In the first half of 2019, the avocado market was fairly good. There were hardly any quality problems, which helped keep prices level,” says Elena Rogojnikova of Hagé International. “Volumes of both Hass and Greenskins were sufficient, and prices were stable. Demand was high as well – both from Dutch supermarkets, supported by a number of successful promotions and actions, and from export customers.”

“The South African Greenskin season will finish earlier this year, so we’ll be faced with shortages of Greenskins in the coming weeks, and this will result in higher prices. Fewer Peruvian Hass avocados are arriving as well. Because of the very high prices in the US, Peru has sent three times more avocados to the US compared to last year. Prices of Hass avocados will recover considerably in Europe in the coming period as well,” Elena expects.

“Late August and early September, the situation in avocados will normalise again, starting with Hass avocados from Chile and Galil avocados, and these will be followed by Ettinger from Israel,” the importer says. “Plenty of Hass is expected from Chile and Colombia, which is becoming an ever more important region for the production of avocados.”

“Regarding Greenskins from Israel, the season starts on time late in August with the first Galil avocados, however, the coming Israeli season will be a so-called off-season; supply of Ettingers is expected to be lower, and the supply of Pinkerton is expected to be considerably lower,” Elena concludes.
