The Government of Benin has undertaken major reforms to boost the agricultural sector by increasing production in order to make agriculture an important lever for economic growth and job creation. The current scheme aims to increase pineapple production from 400,000 tonnes to 600,000 tonnes by 2021.
Pineapple has indeed been identified as a key sector to boost the development of Beninese agriculture. However, the areas of its development are facing wild urbanization. The Government therefore wants to "make reasoned and intelligent subdivisions, limit the use of space for buildings to leave farmers the land favourable to their crops". This will increase yields from 60 to 80 tonnes per ha.
