Spanish banana shipments fell below imports for eight consecutive months

In December, the volume of bananas shipped from the Canary Islands stood below imports for the eighth consecutive month. In 2018, the accumulated market share of imported bananas in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands ranged between 43% and 60% of the available supply, eight percentage points higher than in 2017.

In December 2018, 24,972 tons were shipped from the Canary Islands, while imports, mainly from Africa and Latin America, rose to 30,665 tons. Since re-exports amounted to 9,133 tons, Spanish consumers had access to some 46,504 tons of bananas. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas in December in Spain ranged from a minimum of 46% to a maximum of 66%.

The main suppliers of imported bananas in December were Costa Rica, with 11,585 tons, Colombia, with 5,413 tons, Cote d'Ivoire, with 4,792 tons and France, with 4,502 tons. Together, these four countries accounted for 86% of the total volume.

In all of 2018, shipments from the Canary Islands came close to 350,004 tons, banana imports stood at 365,324 tons and re-exports reached 104,305 tons, so the available supply amounted to 611,022 tons; 15,592 more than in 2017. The accumulated market share of imported bananas in Spain ranged from a minimum of 43% to a maximum of 60%.

The main suppliers of imported bananas in 2018 were Costa Rica, with 125,792 tons, Cote d'Ivoire, with 64,201 tons, Colombia, with 51,849 tons, France, with 38,494 tons and Cameroon, with 24,728 tons. Together, these five countries accounted for 83% of the total volume.
