The sales of mushrooms are going quite smoothly according to Alexander van der Linden of Verhoeckx & Zn from Kerkdriel, the Netherlands. “It has actually been going very well since last summer. After the holidays, actions were planned quite soon, so there are now hardly any surpluses. This results in sales prices around 1.70 to 1.80 euro for medium sizes of white mushrooms in free trade.”
“For the market situation it might be good there isn’t an overproduction, but the situation does have a background. A lot of growers have trouble finding pickers and are therefore afraid of scaling up,” Alexander continues. “Besides, demand for mushrooms is far from low, but usually the mushroom market does well around Easter. More fresh vegetables arrive on the market after that, and mushrooms are bought slightly less often.”
An exception on the mushroom market is the oyster mushroom. “A few weeks ago, a lot of these were still available, but the market changed like a leaf on a tree. Oyster mushrooms are currently very scarce in part because of problems with green mould. The supply of chestnut mushrooms is also very scarce,” Alexander concludes.
