In one of its 10 TV PHILIBON videos on youtube, the Boyer company shows the dragon fruit (or pitaya) cultivations on the Reunion island. Jean-Marc Boyer, commercial director of the company, presents this cactus fruit pollinated by hand and rather unknown in metropolitan France. “There are three main types of pitayas: the red with red flesh, the pink with white flesh and the yellow with white flesh. The first two are produced on the Reunion island, although in small quantities given the constraints on production. It is a fruit that deserves to be discovered by French consumers. At the moment, it can be found in specialized stores. According to Jean-Marc, “the pitaya is considered a niche product in France today. It stands out thanks to its refreshing texture, its bright colors which are a real decorative asset in a culinary point of view. The dragon fruit also contains a lot of water, fibers and vitamins.”
The company is currently working on the commercial development of the yellow dragon fruit with white flesh from Ecuador, where the production areas are larger than in Reunion. “In terms of taste, this fruit stands out more than the other white flesh varieties with red or pink skin. It has a sweeter and more pronounced taste,” explains Jean-Marc. The company will soon publish a facebook post about this flamboyant exotic fruit.
