Ireland: Farmers protest below-cost selling of vegetables

Disgruntled Irish farmers are holding a protest at a Marks and Spencer's store in Dublin, against the below-cost selling of vegetables. The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) is staging the demonstration at the supermarket’s Liffey Valley store.

They say the low cost of vegetables is 'unethical' and makes it harder for a sector that is already struggling. IFA President Joe Healy: "It’s been a very tough year on producers, with significant extra costs because of the late Spring and the drought conditions during the summer. Reducing the shelf price of some vegetables and potatoes to as low as €0.20/kg sends a very misleading message to consumers regarding the costs, risks and skills associated with this sector."
