The current market for Moroccan mandarins is definitely not smooth. "We had a difficult start with the Clementines. Just as was the case with Spain, the supply only started two or three weeks later. There was a shortage of rain during the hot summer months. However, in recent weeks harvesting was hampered due to excessive rain," says Jan van der Voort of Anaco Greeve.
"Just as with Spain, there are many small-sized fruits available. This resulted in a higher volume than last year. However, this excess consists mainly of small sizes. There is a shortage of availability of good-sized citrus," says Jan. "Sales are also not coming off the ground. For citrus sales, the weather stayed warm for too long. Fortunately, it is getting colder now, but the trade on the free market is really average."
According to Jan, the market for Moroccan mandarins is proceeding at a stable rate. "It is noticeable that, in recent years, many farmers have switched to the Nadorcott variety. The Ortanique mandarin is gaining ground in Morocco. Europe is also not, by any means, Morocco's most important market. The largest volumes are currently going to the United States, Canada, and Russia."
Anaco Greeve mainly sells Moroccan citrus to European wholesalers. "Mostly within the Netherlands. Although, we will shortly be receiving Berkane Clementines. These, we do sell on the overseas market. Hopefully, demand will increase soon because, up to now, it has been a dismal market. It could use a revival," concludes the importer.
