Domenico Liturri of Agricoper

A very problematic grape season is coming to an end

Domenico Liturri, sales and marketing manager for Agricoper, told  FreshPlaza, “Currently, different grape varieties are available, both with seeds or seedless. At the moment, we are marketing the classic white Italian (with seeds) – which is always much appreciated by our clients for its delicate flavour – and the Red Globe (red, with seeds), characterized by spherical berries.

“The seedless varieties available are the white Crystal ® (slight Muscat flavour), the Sugar Crisp ® (sweet autumn speciality), and the red Jack’s Salute ® - which is the most demanded by foreign markets for its crunchy berries and its unique taste.

Jack's Salute

With regard to the relationship with Germany, the Agricoper manager said that it has always been very profitable, “Additionally, it is a market which we care about a lot. The 2018 trend confirms the increasing trend of the consumption of seedless grape, both white and red, at the expenses of traditional Italian grape”.

The heavy rains of August surely did not help the 2018 campaign. According to Liturri, the cracking-related issues diminished, “As already said, with a careful grape cleaning and selection, it was possible to limit the damage – even though this process meant an increase in the cost. Thanks to our innovative production systems, we were able to manage the problems”.

Liturri concluded, “In this last period of the campaign, we encountered many problems which made the management even more complex. Our grapes felt the after-effects of rain and humidity. A very problematic season is coming to an end. The grape became weak in these last month, especially starting from October. I admit that it was quite a challenge to keep the high-quality standards we expect at Agricoper”.
