New variety of persimmon featured at PMA Fresh Summit

The Giumarra Companies announced it will offer a new, proprietary persimmon variety, Sugar & Spice™, this fall. The persimmon is shaped like a traditional Hachiya persimmon but has a ready-to-eat texture like a Fuyu.

“We sampled Sugar & Spice last fall with a select group of customers, and the response to the flavor was overwhelmingly positive,” says Jeannine Martin, Director of Sales for Giumarra Reedley. “It is high Brix, with unique notes of fall baking spices and a touch of vanilla. Its texture is similar to a crunchy Fuyu. A creamier texture occurs when additional ripening happens at home, much like an avocado’s transitional ripening process.”

Sugar & Spice will be available mid-October in a one-layer tray pack with PLU #4427 or a retailer-assigned PLU. The variety will also be available in a larger 8-10-piece consumer pack with UPC. The fruit is grown in the San Joaquin Valley of California.

“We look forward to expanding our growing persimmon category with this proprietary new variety perfect for fall celebrations,” says Kellee Harris, Western Region Business Director for Giumarra. “Sugar & Spice is locally-grown in California and packed with nutritional value. It lends a burst of color and flavor to salads and desserts.”

Sugar & Spice rounds out Giumarra’s fall persimmon program, which includes traditional Hachiya and Fuyu varieties.

“With the addition of Sugar & Spice and an overall increase in our persimmon program, Giumarra is now the largest supplier of California persimmons in the U.S.,” says Ms. Harris. “Our Fuyu persimmons just started shipping and our total persimmon program will conclude in December.”

PMA Fresh Summit
The new variety will be available until early November, so altogether for about three short weeks. Pending seasonality and availability, Giumarra plans to have a small selection of the fruit available at the Fresh Summit booth for retailers to see in person. Sugar & Spice will be available to retailers nationwide.

"We look forward to connecting with our customers, growers, and other partners at one of the top events our industry has to offer," says Megan Schulz. "We will be celebrating our 25-year anniversary of partnership with our grower Videxport of Sonora, Mexico." Please visit the Giumarra Companies at booth #3401 in Orlando.
