Azerbaijan investigates claims of artificially dyed Iranian oranges

Iran is one of the region's major citrus producers, supplying significant volumes of oranges both to its domestic market and to neighbouring countries. However, a recent video circulating on social media has sparked concern, alleging that oranges intended for sale in Iran are being dipped into a colouring solution to enhance their appearance.

If confirmed, such practices would raise questions about product safety and consumer deception, as well as potential risks for importing countries, including Azerbaijan.

The footage suggests that some fruit may be artificially brightened to appear fresher and more visually appealing. Iranian agricultural authorities have not yet provided an official explanation regarding the matter, and earlier warnings in the country have highlighted the possible health risks associated with artificially coloured fruit.

The key question now is whether such products could enter export channels and reach foreign markets.

The Azerbaijan Food Safety Agency (AFSA) told Bizim.Media that it is already aware of the circulating video.

"The footage shared on social media has been taken under control by AFSA. An investigation is underway. Oversight of plant-based products imported into the country is carried out through risk assessment. The findings will be made public," the agency said in its statement.
