Chinese President Xi Jinping said that Beijing and Washington have reached a consensus on economic and trade priorities following his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, Xi told Trump that China and the United States should avoid entering a "vicious cycle of retaliation" against each other. The two leaders met in Busan, South Korea, amid ongoing trade tensions that have affected global supply chains.
Xi emphasized the need for both countries to focus on long-term cooperation and maintain stability in their economic relationship. "Refine and finalize follow-up work as soon as possible, maintain and implement the consensus, and provide tangible results to set minds at ease about the economies of China, the United States, and the world," Xi said, according to Xinhua.
The discussions were described as part of continuing efforts to ease trade frictions between the world's two largest economies. Both sides have expressed interest in establishing clearer communication channels and addressing structural issues related to tariffs and market access.
The meeting comes as business sectors and commodity markets continue to monitor the trade relationship between China and the United States, with the potential outcomes expected to influence international trade flows and pricing trends in the months ahead.
