New hybrid papayas to be launched in Brazil

Sakata Seed Sudamerica and Semillas del Caribe, a Mexican company specializing in papaya breeding, have announced a new partnership to introduce three hybrid papaya varieties to the Brazilian market in 2025. The collaboration, which marks Sakata's first global co-branding initiative, combines the companies' breeding, technical, and commercial expertise to expand Brazil's papaya seed portfolio.

The initiative follows more than three years of planning and testing with local producers. The new cultivars—Giruz, Sweet Sense, and Passion Red—belong to the Formosa segment and have been evaluated for yield, postharvest durability, and fruit quality under Brazilian growing conditions.

According to Sakata marketing director Paulo Koch, the partnership aims to strengthen the domestic papaya supply chain by combining high-performance genetics with technical support and an established distribution network. "The papaya varieties underwent rigorous testing with large and medium-sized local producers to validate the performance and reliability of the products in Brazil," he said.

Seed distribution is expected to begin in October 2025 through Sakata's national sales network. Each product will be sold in stand-up envelopes containing 2,500 seeds under both brands.

Commercial strategy and market selection
Koch said the collaboration aligns with a shared business strategy focused on innovation and producer support. "Papaya represents a new market segment for Sakata, and the choice to associate our brand with Semillas del Caribe, a specialist in genetic improvement for this fruit, was an assertive decision," he said.

Semillas del Caribe co-founder Francisco Mora noted that the partnership would combine the company's breeding expertise with Sakata's technical and commercial reach. "We believe in accelerated sales growth, supported by the commercial trials already conducted and proven results," Mora said. "We expect widespread adoption of our varieties in the country, thanks to the quality, credibility, and tradition of the brands involved."
