Vietnamese pineapple exports surge on EU and U.S. demand

Pineapple has become one of Vietnam's key agricultural export products, with export value in August reaching US$950,000, an increase of more than 400%, according to the Vietnam Customs. This brought total pineapple exports for the first nine months of the year to US$8 million, up 114% year-on-year.

Vietnamese pineapples are now exported to over 100 countries and territories. The European Union remains the largest market, accounting for nearly 48% of total export revenue, with Russia as the leading importer within the bloc. The United States follows as the second-largest destination, contributing around 20% of the total export value.

Vietnam holds a competitive position in the deep-processed pineapple segment, with three major varieties cultivated nationwide: Queen, Cayenne, and MD2. The MD2 variety dominates exports, representing 50–55% of the global market and 70–75% of the EU market, due to its flavour profile and consistent quality.

In high-end markets such as Japan, Vietnamese pineapples can sell for up to US$4,000 per tonne, which is US$1,000–1,200 higher than prices in the EU or the U.S., reflecting stronger demand and higher market value.

Processed pineapple products, especially juice, continue to play an important role in overall export turnover. Key destinations for Vietnam's processed pineapple exports include the EU, Russia, the U.S., and the Republic of Korea.

However, Vietnamese processed pineapple producers face competition from major global suppliers. Low processing efficiency has led to higher production costs and reduced competitiveness. The fruit is also not officially exported to China, with most shipments entering through informal trade channels.

Research indicates that the global pineapple market was valued at US$28.79 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.33%, reaching US$39.13 billion by 2029. Europe and North America together account for about half of total global consumption, leaving room for further export growth in the coming years.
