Dana Alice causes localized damage to citrus, kaki, and vegetable crops

The Valencian Association of Farmers (AVA-ASAJA) reported localized damage to citrus, kakis, and vegetables caused by recent hailstorms in Silla and Sueca, along with concerns about increased humidity if heavy rains persist over the coming days.

The water was also accompanied by hail in Silla on Wednesday night and Thursday, and in Sueca at midday on Monday, causing varying degrees of damage to kakis and citrus fruits, two crops that were just beginning their main harvest. The impact of the hail is already visible on the kaki fruit, which has the most sensitive skin, while the effects on citrus will become apparent in the next few days.

The agricultural sector is also waiting to see how the rainfall develops, as further damage will depend on its intensity and duration, as well as subsequent warm or cold temperatures. Currently, AVA-ASAJA reports that hundreds of citrus, persimmon, and vegetable fields along the Valencia and northern Castellón coast have been flooded for hours or even several days, especially in areas near the Albufera. In persimmon cultivation, the most vulnerable fruits are those that have been treated to accelerate ripening. In citrus, early mandarins already being harvested may suffer from pixat issues, while hybrid varieties are at risk of infection from the alternaria fungus. Depending on the severity of the flooding, there are concerns that the same plantations could experience root asphyxia. Growers will also face increased costs for fungicide treatments on citrus and vegetables.

Generally speaking, however, the water is beneficial for recharging reservoirs and aquifers after a dry and hot summer. It also helps recover pastures for livestock, reduces the need for irrigation, cleans trees, and supports the growth of fruit awaiting harvest.
