Martin Bolhuis, Tuindersbelang:

"Wide price gap between small and large cabbages"

"There is a big price difference between small and large cabbages at the moment," says Martin Bolhuis of Tuindersbelang from Warmenhuizen, which organises sales for around 60 cabbage growers. "This is because the cabbages in the field have experienced a strong growth spurt and are therefore fairly large in size. Smaller cabbages, on the other hand, are less available. As a result, the price of small-sized cabbages has risen rapidly, while the price level of large-sized cabbages remains somewhat stagnant."

"As a result, we see a wide variation in prices. For white cabbage, the price of large loose cabbages (for industry) in boxes is around €0.12, the 9/10 grades sell for around €0.20, and the 60s are sold for €0.50. We see the same pattern with red cabbage. The larger cabbages in boxes are sold for around €0.20–0.25, the 9/10 grading is around €0.28–0.29, and for the smaller sizes, as with white cabbage, the price is around €0.50."

"Growers are all harvesting, so availability is lower. At the same time, everyone, including abroad, is looking for sales to the processing industry. Otherwise, demand is broad. Some cabbage is going to Spain, but otherwise it is going to regular customers across almost all of Europe. I do not expect any major developments in the coming period. The smaller cabbages will probably maintain their price, while the larger ones will depend on demand. We will know more in a few months."

The acreage of growers for whom Tuindersbelang centrally organises sales is fairly stable, according to Martin. "We have a number of older growers who have stopped, but the acreage is being maintained by younger growers who are expanding."
