Moldovan plums continue to make a name for themselves in Europe, now representing over 80% of the country's total plum exports. Thanks to a new trade agreement with the European Commission, Moldova can export up to 76,000 tonnes of plums to the EU duty-free in 2025, four times more than before.
"This is a record quota and a positive signal for our sector," said exporter Elena Davidescu, whose company ships plums, grapes, peaches, apricots, and cherries to France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, and the Baltic States. Her firm recently opened a modern packaging center in Anenii Noi, fully compliant with European standards, supported by subsidies and EU funds.
"The EU market offers the best prices and stability. European consumers appreciate our fruits for their authentic taste," Davidescu explained. Her company holds GlobalG.A.P. and GRASP certifications, ensuring full traceability and the responsible use of plant protection products, which is crucial for access to European retailers.
Exports peak between October and November, when stored plums are shipped to EU buyers. Investments in cooling and packaging are crucial for maintaining fruit quality during transport. Properly chilled and packed plums sell for 9–12 lei/kg, compared to just 5 lei during harvest.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the expansion of export quotas and post-harvest modernization will further enhance Moldova's reputation as a reliable European fruit supplier. "Moldovan plums have become our national brand, sweet, safe, and competitive," Davidescu concluded.
