Israel sees shift to dark-skinned avocado varieties

With the start of the 2025/26 avocado season, Israel is once again expecting a total harvest of around 220,000 tons, a volume similar to last year. Approximately 120,000 tons of this will be destined for export, while the remainder will be consumed on the domestic market. The cultivation area has steadily expanded in recent years and now covers about 15,000 hectares, with an annual increase of 800 to 1,000 hectares.

What stands out in particular is the clear shift from green varieties such as Pinkerton to the darker-skinned types. During a meeting with growers and exporters, Eitan Zvi, the newly appointed CEO of Galilee Export, emphasized that global demand for avocados continues to rise: "Ten years ago, global demand for avocados stood at around 2 million tons; today it is nearing 3 million tons." Galilee Export accounts for roughly 40 percent of Israel's avocado exports.

The main export markets for green varieties remain Russia, Poland, and Eastern Europe, while in Western Europe consumer preference is clearly directed toward the darker-skinned varieties, which now represent more than 90 percent of consumption.
