Ukrainian consumers may face a sharp rise in cabbage prices this winter due to a lack of suitable storage facilities, according to economist and publicist Oleksandr Okhrimenko.
At present, cabbage is available on the market, but long-term storage remains the main challenge. Okhrimenko noted that many facilities do not provide the proper conditions, leading to significant spoilage, especially during colder months. This situation could push retail prices to around 100 UAH per kilogram (€2.30).
"The problem is not buying the cabbage now, but where to store it. Without proper storage, large volumes will simply rot," the economist said.
As an alternative, Ukraine may increasingly rely on imports. While supply channels are currently stable, the lack of domestic storage capacity creates risks of shortages and price spikes during the winter.
Okhrimenko also advised households with access to cellars or proper storage conditions to purchase cabbage now, preserving it for later use to avoid higher prices.
