AGF monitor week 36

Netherlands: Plenty of promotions for vine tomatoes as average broccoli price falls further

AGF Monitor compares Dutch weekly price trends of various fruits and vegetables as found online. The prices are monitored by the Dutch publication Supermarktscanner.nl. The price poll takes place at the end of the week.

Cucumber© Supermarktscanner.nl
Dirk promotes cucumber in week 36 and lowers the price by 10 cents, while Hoogvliet's week 35 promotion has ended. The other supermarkets surveyed keep prices stable, leaving the average price at 80 cents.

Broccoli© Supermarktscanner.nl
In week 36, four of the seven supermarkets monitored adjusted the broccoli price. Jumbo offers the lowest price with a promotion of 0.89 cents per 500 grams. Albert Heijn lowers the price to 1.09 euros. Hoogvliet and Plus raise their prices by 10 and 4 cents, respectively. The average broccoli price falls to 1.04 euros, which is 4 cents lower than in week 35.

Blueberries© Supermarktscanner.nlA sharp increase in the average price for blueberries (300g) is seen in week 36, rising by 23 cents. This is mainly due to price hikes by Plus (from 3.00 to 3.99 euros), DekaMarkt (from 3.89 to 4.49), and Dirk (from 3.49 to 3.99 euros). Vomar tempers the average with a price cut of 26 cents.

Mango© Supermarktscanner.nlMango prices return to normal at Albert Heijn and Dirk, causing the average price to rebound from 1.80 to 1.91 euros.

Strawberries© Supermarktscanner.nl Dirk highlights strawberries with a 50-cent discount. However, with Albert Heijn and Hoogvliet promotions ending, the average price continues its upward trend, reaching 3.54 euros for 400 grams.

Vine tomatoes© Supermarktscanner.nlPlenty of promotions on vine tomatoes, with Albert Heijn and Plus both lowering prices by 20 cents and Vomar by 10 cents. This causes the average price to drop significantly, from 1.24 euros in week 35 to 1.15 euros in week 36.

Price and quality
Price data come from Supermarktscanner.nl and are based on online prices in the webshops of Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Plus, DekaMarkt, Dirk, and Hoogvliet. The prices are averages, including promotions. This comparison does not take origin or quality into account. Most supermarkets do not provide these details on their websites, although Hoogvliet and Jumbo mention the country of origin. The above comparison may include unripe avocados versus ripe ones, or Spanish cucumbers versus Dutch ones.

Notes on the data
Vomar uses fixed prices online. Avocados have been missing from the online range since 2022, and since week 24, so has Galia. Hoogvliet and Vomar hand oranges are sold in 1.5 kg packs, and the price is converted to 2 kg. Jumbo only sells packaged vine tomatoes per 5 pieces instead of per 500g or kilo. For comparison purposes, we count 100g per tomato.
