While last year there was a shortage of Belgian endive, resulting in high prices, this year the situation is very different. "Sales have been difficult all year. There are a lot more endive roots, and demand has lagged behind for a long time. Fortunately, perhaps due to the end of the summer holidays, we are now seeing demand pick up a little," says Sjan van Gorsel of Reijnpack from Sint-Philipsland.
"The endive prices at the Belgian auctions were around €1.40 this week, but a fortnight ago the price was still around €0.80, so at least we are on the up," Sjan continues. "The kilos are now also starting to decline a bit, so supply will be slightly lower in the coming period. Exports from the Netherlands are mainly to Italy, some to Germany, and to a lesser extent to destinations like Scandinavia and Eastern Europe."

Those prices were also good last year, but are now very moderate," the endive packer said. Reijnpack sells endives mainly in trays/punnets and flowpacks. Red endives are also sold loose. With growing pens on 160 hectares, refrigeration, endive growing, cutting, weighing, and packing an average of 45,000 traypack and flowpack packages of 500 grams, Reijnpack is one of the largest Dutch endive growers in terms of size.
