AGF Monitor week 35:

Dirk and Hoogvliet keep vine tomato prices low, mango and strawberry promotions continue

AGF Monitor compares weekly price trends of various fruits and vegetables as found online. The prices are monitored by Supermarktscanner.nl. The price poll takes place at the end of the week.

Cucumber© Supermarktscanner.nl

Hoogvliet promoted cucumber in week 35 and reduced the price by 10 cents. The other supermarkets surveyed kept their prices stable, with the three national retailers AH, Jumbo, and Plus holding the price at €0.85 each, and the others at €0.79. On average, the price stands at €0.80.

Broccoli© Supermarktscanner.nl

The broccoli price continues to fluctuate, averaging €1.08. In week 35, we see a major price drop at Hoogvliet from €1.19 to €0.99 per 500 grams, bringing them to the same level as Dirk. Both supermarkets can therefore claim the lowest price. DekaMarkt has also reduced its price; after weeks of having the highest price, they are now €0.04 lower. Jumbo's price drop from week 33 did not hold; they raised the price and now share the highest price (€1.19 per 500 g) with Albert Heijn.

Blueberries© Supermarktscanner.nl

On average, not much changes in the price of blueberries in week 35, but there are two major shifts. Dirk increases its price by €0.50 to reach €3.49. PLUS can now claim the lowest price with an offer of -€1.49, bringing the price down to €3.00 per 300 grams.

Mango© Supermarktscanner.nl

In week 34, both Albert Heijn and Dirk highlighted mangoes. Albert Heijn reduced the price by €0.80 and Dirk by €0.30, pulling the average price down by €0.16.

Strawberries© Supermarktscanner.nl

The strawberry price remains highly dynamic with substantial offers. In descending order, Albert Heijn, Jumbo, and Hoogvliet discounted by €1.00, €0.99, and €0.50 per 400 grams, respectively. Jumbo, however, also raised its price substantially by €1.00.

Vine tomatoes© Supermarktscanner.nlThe promotions for vine tomatoes at Dirk and Hoogvliet have ended, with both supermarkets now setting the fixed price at €0.89 per 500 grams. This price level is considerably lower than what the other surveyed supermarkets apply.

Price and quality
Price data come from Supermarktscanner.nl and are based on the online shops of Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Plus, DekaMarkt, Dirk, and Hoogvliet. The price is an average, including promotions. This price comparison does not include origin and quality. Most supermarkets do not mention these details on their websites; Hoogvliet and Jumbo do mention the country of origin. It is therefore possible that the comparison above reflects unripe avocados against ripe ones, or Spanish cucumbers against Dutch ones.

Notes on the data
Vomar works with fixed online prices. Avocado has been missing from its online range since 2022 week 24, so has Galia. Hoogvliet and Vomar hand oranges are sold in 1.5 kg packs, and the price is converted to 2 kg. Jumbo only sells packaged vine tomatoes per 5 pieces instead of per 500 g or per kilo. For the comparison, 100 g per tomato is used.
