Myanmar targets Singapore and Thailand for avocado exports

Myanmar avocado exports will mainly be directed to Singapore and Thailand this season, according to the Myanmar Avocado Producer and Exporter Association (MAVO). The September–December harvest is reported to be abundant, with volumes exceeding domestic demand and moving into international markets.

Exported varieties include Hass, Buccaneer, and Amaya. Myanmar currently has around 20,000 acres planted with Hass avocado. Last year's avocado output was estimated at 3,000 tons, and the yield is expected to increase this year.

The Department of Agriculture and MAVO are working together to secure registration with the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (GACC) to enable official avocado exports to China. On 19 July 2025, the Agriculture Department in southern Shan State held a workshop for growers on customs inspections and GACC safety requirements. MAVO secretary U Kyaw Soe noted that farmers need to cooperate in testing for six common insects to qualify for exports to China.

MAVO's chair has established a farmer public company with a focus on exports to Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand during the current season. The association is also supporting growers through the facilitation of agricultural inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides.

The Shan State Department of Agriculture provided information on Myanmar's annual avocado export performance, as well as import conditions in potential markets, including China, India, Russia, and Middle Eastern countries. Officials also outlined the quality standards Myanmar avocados need to meet in line with European requirements.

Grower U Ye Lin Oo presented on plant nutrient management to fellow growers and business representatives, with farm owners reaffirming their commitment to boosting exports.

On 14 August 2025, the Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization of the Ministry of Commerce hosted a virtual meeting with Indian stakeholders. The discussions included collaboration in value-added avocado production, reporting on Myanmar's avocado quality and yields to India, and inviting Public-Private Partnership investment from India into the sector.
