Vittorio Vitali of Agripat on the harvest in Emilia-Romagna:

The potato harvest showed markedly different yield levels

This has not been a typical campaign. While yields were decent in the Ferrara area, they dropped significantly in the Bologna area. "From the beginning of the harvest, we at Agripat had a clear understanding of the situation," explains President Vittorio Vitali. We knew that 2025 would be a very different year depending on the area."

"In the Bologna area, the main potato-growing region, several companies have reported decreases of 20 to 30 percent. This is not only a matter of lower production volumes, but also increased waste, which reduces the amount of produce that can be sold. In some cases, fortunately, a few in number, farms did not even harvest. This was because there was too much waste. Harvesting would have caused further cost increases."

The top variety, Primura, was affected by Rhizoctonia disease, in addition to the usual sector problems, such as Elateridae and excessive temperatures while harvesting.

"On the contrary, yields in the province of Ferrara were even higher than in 2024, with increases of up to 10% for medium-to-good quality," the president of Agripat continues.

The market situation seems to be at a standstill. "Organized producers who are part of a system are better protected than independent producers who lack reference points for their products. As a regional system, our goal is to maintain high prices so that cultivation remains profitable for producers. Clearly, this is not easy, especially given the foreign products offered at competitive prices, such as French potatoes."
