Kazakhstan sharply increased its potato imports in the first half of 2025, according to LS reports. The country purchased 174,900 tons worth $46.2 million, which is 6.6 times more than in the same period last year.
The main suppliers were China, with 115,800 tons (368 times more), and Pakistan, with 46,700 tons (146.6 times more). Imports also grew from Iran, Germany, Belarus, and the Netherlands. In addition, Kazakhstan sourced potatoes from Egypt, Mongolia, and the UK, which had not supplied the country last year.
At the same time, imports of other staple vegetables declined.
Onions and garlic: down 12.3% to 103,800 tons worth $33.4 million. Uzbekistan remained the key supplier with 89,200 tons (–12.3%).
Other sources included:
- Tajikistan, 7,200 tons, (–1.8 times),
- China, 6,000 tons, (+1.7 times),
- Iran, 570 tons, (+33.5 times),
- Turkmenistan, 330 tons, (+3 times),
- Afghanistan, 228 tons (new supplier),
- the Netherlands, 83 tons, (+4.5 times).
Carrots and turnips: down 16.8% to 19,800 tons, mainly from Uzbekistan, China, and Kyrgyzstan.
Cabbage: imports halved to 33,900 tons. Supplies from Uzbekistan dropped 2.6 times to 23,500 tons, while imports from China doubled to 7,300 tons. Smaller volumes also came from Iran, Tajikistan, Russia, and Kyrgyzstan.
