The Peras de Rincón de Soto Protected Designation of Origin has started its harvesting period today with the Blanquilla variety. The Conference pear will start to be harvested on August 22. The season has started in La Rioja Baja, Arrúbal, Agoncillo, Logroño, and Fuenmayor, and will gradually reach all areas of the appellation. In the rest of La Rioja Media and La Rioja Alta, the start of the harvest will be decided according to the evolution of the ripening parameters that are being monitored these days by the PDO's technical services.

According to the Regulatory Council, this year's production will have very good quality. They also estimated it will stand at around 21 million kilos. The Council also stressed that the production volume could have been higher, thanks to the excellent size of the pears and their high sugar content. However, the hail in some areas and the damage caused by fire blight affected production. Despite this, they stressed, they expect this year's sales will continue growing, just as they did last season, in which they grew by 4.8%.
