Peruvian fruit consumption in China on an upward trend in 2025

Between January and May 2025, Peruvian fruit exports to China grew by 9% in terms of volume compared to the same period in 2024, according to PromPerú data. This increase was driven by products such as avocado, grapes, blueberries, mangoes, and mandarins. Although the FOB value fell, PromPerú says that domestic demand in Asia remains strong.

According to the organization, "Chinese consumers perceive Peruvian fruit as a quality product, available at strategic times of the year and with an attractive presentation. Blueberries, Hass avocado, and table grapes are very popular, especially when local production is limited."

"In 2024, Peru exported USD 192.8 million worth of fresh and frozen fruit and vegetables to China, 33% less than in 2023. PromPerú attributes this drop to lower imports of Latin American fruit from China, stronger international competition, and the impact of climatic phenomena such as El Niño."

Even so, the organization highlights that between 2020 and 2024, there was an average annual growth of 4% in terms of value and 10% in terms of volume, which is evidence of sustained interest.

Strategic marketing windows and products with potential
According to PromPerú, Peru supplies outstanding quality fruit to the Chinese market during times of low local production. This fruit is organic, traceable, and of premium caliber. Organic bananas and pomegranates are of particular interest, although there is still no access protocol for them. Once approved, it shouldn't take long for them to start arriving, thanks to the infrastructure of the port of Chancay.

Mandarins and mangoes also have potential outside the local season, provided that logistical processes and product presentation are optimized. PromPerú has also identified opportunities for asparagus and frozen products, provided that a steady quality and traceability can be guaranteed.

Upcoming events for the fruit and vegetable sector in Asia
According to the agenda, Peru is going to participate for the first time in the China International Fruit Expo in Shanghai (August 27-29) and will be showcasing blueberries, Hass avocados, mangoes, grapes, pomegranates, and citrus fruits.

Also, from September 3 to 5, Peru will be the Official Partner Country at Asia Fruit Logistica (Hong Kong), with a pavilion that will bring together 15 companies and three exporting associations. PromPeru's objective is to consolidate direct relations with importers and strengthen Peru's reputation as a reliable supplier.

In October, the Peru Meet Up in Lima will aim to connect Latin American exporters with Asian buyers through product exposure, networking, and a specialized program on logistics and innovation.

PromPeru says that although China remains a highly competitive market, Peru's positioning as an off-season supplier with quality products and focused commercial strategies is keeping the doors open for sustained growth.
