The Malaysian state of Penang is working to register additional varieties of local durian kampung from its orchards to expand its portfolio of recognized durian species. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced the initiative during the launch of a durian outreach program at Rain Tree Farm in Taman Permatang Tinggi Indah, stating that many high-quality durian kampung varieties match the flavor profile of the state's better-known hybrids.
"We have many high-quality durian kampung that deserve recognition. I urge producers to take steps toward registering their unique varieties," Chow said.
Recently, Penang registered two new hybrid varieties, Tupai King (D214) and Cenderawasih, increasing the number of officially recognized durians in the state to more than 200. "With this extensive range, we are eager to enhance our global visibility for these products," Chow added.
The state is aiming to expand its durian exports beyond traditional markets such as China and Singapore to new destinations including India, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. Chow said he expects these efforts to support Penang's agricultural sector, with the durian industry generating income for rural communities and attracting younger generations to careers in agrotechnology and agrotourism.
Balik Pulau, a key durian-producing area in Penang, is known for varieties including Black Thorn, Musang King, and Ang Heh (Red Prawn). In 2024, Penang exported 67,203 kilograms of durians, with Musang King and Black Thorn recording the highest demand, according to The Star.
