U.S. pistachio exports reach 23.2k mt in May 2025

The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service has disclosed that U.S. pistachio exports reached 23.2k metric tons in May 2025. This figure reflects an increase of 3.3k mt over April 2025, a decrease of 0.5k mt from May 2024, and a rise of 2.3k mt over the five-year average from 2019/20 to 2023/24. June 2025 data will be the focus of the next release, with a historical five-year average set at 20.0k mt.

In May, the primary export markets accounted for 52% of total shipments. Key destinations included Belgium (3.8k mt), Germany (3.3k mt), Turkey (2.4k mt), Spain (1.5k mt), and India (1.0k mt).

From September to May in the crop marketing year, U.S. exports amounted to 272.5k mt. This presents a shortfall of 78.8k mt year-over-year, a 22% decline, compared to the same interval, yet it surpasses the five-year average by 48.1k mt (+21%). Although the 2023/24 marketing year saw record exports, the alternating production cycle of "on-years" and "off-years" has brought adjustments, with 2024/25 being an "off-year." Stakeholders did not anticipate matching last year's pace, but international demand reportedly remains "incredibly strong," sustaining price stability.

The USDA's projections from February 2025 place the 2024/25 marketing year export forecast at 360k mt, requiring U.S. exporters to ship an average of 29.2k mt monthly from June to August. Historically, the June-August period saw an average of 21.0k mt from 2019/20 to 2023/24.
