The India-grown dragon fruit is becoming more popular as an export product, says Priyanka Chhutani, director of The Aril Company: "India's agricultural export landscape is rapidly evolving, and one of the most promising additions to this growth story is the dragon fruit. This is a vibrant, nutrient-rich tropical fruit, gaining popularity worldwide. India's warm climate, particularly in semi-arid regions, supports high-yield, low-input dragon fruit farming. With increasing global demand, favorable agro-climatic conditions, and government support, India is emerging as a potential hub for dragon fruit cultivation and exports."

The product has been around in India for decades, and production has increased with thousands of hectares of acreage for the product, Chhutani explains. "Dragon fruit was introduced in India in the early 2000s and has since seen rapid expansion, accounting for 3,000+ hectares according to the Ministry of Agriculture in India. Dragon fruit is low in calories, rich in antioxidants, fiber, vitamin C, and other essential nutrients, making it a highly sought-after fruit in health-conscious markets."

According to Chhutani, India could become a prominent player in dragon fruit, as it has some significant advantages over the competition. He states: "I think there are many competitive advantages for the dragon fruit cultivated in India. For one, there is a shorter transit time for the Gulf countries as well as the European markets. When compared to the Latin American of Southeast Asian competitors, the pricing of Dragon fruit from India is also rather affordable. On top of that, Indian dragon fruit production cycles can be maintained year-round, and there are already emerging organic cultivation practices in the farm."

As the company name suggests, The Aril Company is actually known for an entirely different product. "As a pomegranate aril company, our foray into dragon fruit cultivation is a promising story of agricultural innovation and market opportunity. With supportive policies, improved infrastructure, and growing global appetite for exotic, healthy fruits, dragon fruit exports from India are poised to become a significant contributor to our company's horticultural exports," Chhutani concludes.
